Chapter 7

This chapter deals with security when it comes to computers and computer networks.

The Giver takes place in a Utopia where nobody has personal computers, and there are no hackers or other bad actors that would seek to take advantage of computers or networks, as people have neither the motivation nor the tools to do so.

The only computers that exist are only available to the elders and other people in significant leadership positions, and they are mostly just used to monitor their citizens and keep a database with information on where they've been recently. They are also used to communicate via hologram with either the entire community or just certain dwellings. There are also flight computers that allow drone pilots to pilot their drones remotely, however they don't seem to be able to do anything besides that.

While in today's world, such technology, especially the database containing video footage of where every individual person has been and what they've done, would be extremely valuable, and it would be disastrous if it fell into the wrong hands, there simply are no "wrong hands" in this society, and as such, computer and network security is not relevant in the film.
