The Elders utilize hologram calls to enter the homes of community members as they wish and without prior authorization. This is used as a tactic to get in immediate contact with the community members within the home. The technology is used to try to intimidate Jonas and the Giver when the Chief Elder becomes suspicious of their motives.

Drones patrol the community. Asher, Jonas’s best friend and the Chief Elder’s agent, uses drones to hunt down Jonas and baby Gabriel. Drones represent the community’s tyrannical and invasive government.

Surveillance towers watch the community and enforce its rules and regulations. The Chief Elder and her staff use the cameras to see and intervene in everything, and to track Jonas and Gabriel, a baby he saves from release. The towers symbolize the community’s loss of privacy and freedom, and the authorities’ manipulation and deception.
