Paper Summary: Chapter 3

In chapter 3 of the book, we discuss networked communications. The development of phone usage has had many impacts on society from addiction to censorship. In The Giver, society does not have as much access to technology as we do today. Still, there are still some themes that hold similarities between the movie and real life. I will start with a debatable aspect, internet interactions, now since the movie does not explicitly show a modem or mention the internet, this could be a stretch. However, it should not be surprising since the Chief Elder hologram calls into the yearly celebration and Jonas’s home when he is dancing with his younger sister. It could be that everything is wired, and she calls off a machine. Either way, we can still hold onto the themes of chapter 3 and find similarities and differences.
