Chapter 8

Chapter 8 deals with the reliability of computers and how that affects society.

In the film, the technology is extremely reliable and advanced and there is no record of it ever malfunctioning or breaking or otherwise not doing what it was supposed to do, save for one exception. The one exception of note is the injection system, which is supposed to inject emotion-suppressant into each person in the community before they leave their dwellings each day. Jonas is able to trick this system by letting it inject the suppressant into an apple instead. This allows him to develop feelings for Fiona, which, once the elders find this out through looking at video logs of him, makes them pretty distraught.

This is the only instance shown in the film of technology not being reliable.
